Wyrd Sisters is the 6th novel in the DiscWorld series and has more than a ‘nod’ to Shakespear’s ‘Scottish Play’, with appropriate quotes along the way. Whilst not exactly a comedy in the laugh out loud sense, there are certainly some laugh out loud moments, and gentle humour right across the play.
The action takes place in many and varied settings, and the set was brilliantly handled by using, what was essentially a 4 sided box on wheels which was manually turned as required. One of the ‘sides’ was a screen, which just added to the whole visual effect. As the box was turned it was accompanied by a ‘musical box’ type tinkling tune which really added to the whole effect. The staging overall was excellent and worked really well.
Costumes were simply superb, no mean feat as there were a cast of some 19, more than half of whom were playing multiple parts, which must have been a challenge to say the least, and which you rose to and simply smashed. Everyone looked great.
The whole cast are to be warmly congratulated as one of the characters was taken ill the day before dress rehearsal and the part was taken over by the Director, Kath Greenwood, who played a good part and with no script, very well done. Congratulations also to the remainder of the cast who carried on as if nothing was different and kept the whole thing going at a good pace. Well done!!
I must also congratulate ‘the three witches’ each of whom played a really great part, as each one was a total individual, certainly not ‘lumped’ as one of three. Such great and believable characterisations, very well done to all three of you. In fact, all the parts, across the whole play were portrayed well, and many congratulations to everyone for remaining in character, especially when you were playing 2 or 3 different characters.
All in all, a most entertaining and enjoyable evening, with excellent and believable characters, and vocally clear, and a great setting.
